Fifth and Sixth Grade science students attend a “Virtual STEM Field Trip”
Discovery Education and the Navy provided some of our St. John students with a unique STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math) classroom experience to “take flight” to the USS Nimitz – one of the greatest and oldest aircraft carriers in service. Through live interviews with some of the Navy’s elite sailors, students learned about a variety of careers, and why STEM skills are so important to learn. Students saw an F-18 pilot, an aviation mechanic and meteorologist while learning about how scientific principles are utilized. Through a demonstration of the Bernoulli principle, our middle schoolers observed how air behaves under certain conditions, and how it relates it relates to the lift of flight.
Following the virtual trip, students participated in a lab about seismic waves with Mr. Langford.
